Big Fish Charitable Foundation Partners with Basic Needs Closets

As the leaves start to turn and families settle into this year’s back-to-school routine, the Big Fish Charitable Foundation couldn’t be more excited to help Delaware students through their new partnership with Basic Needs Closets. The Big Fish Charitable Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization started by co-founders of the Big Fish Restaurant Group, Eric and Norman Sugrue, and BFRG Vice President Holly Monaco. The mission of the Foundation since its inception in 2013 is to engage in charitable work that benefits children in need. The Foundation’s partnership with Basic Needs Closets will allow them to really focus on this mission and carry it out right here at home.

The Basic Needs Closets program began in August 2017 and is currently active in 43 high-need schools across the state. In each of these elementary and middle schools, students are able to discreetly access a closet stocked with clothing, hygiene products and school supplies throughout the school year to meet their basic needs. The Big Fish Charitable Foundation will provide funding to purchase these items – such as coats, socks, shoes, soap, notebooks and pencils – that each school deems necessary to meet its individual students’ needs. Put simply, Basic Needs Closets provide essentials to Delaware students so they can focus on being successful in the classroom.

The Basic Needs Closets are made possible by the combined efforts of Delaware educators, businesses, healthcare organizations, and First Book. The Big Fish Charitable Foundation is honored to join those working to help students in their home state. Executive Director of the Foundation Brian Mann recently spoke on the opportunities this partnership provides: “The Basic Needs Closets program is a perfect fit for our foundation. It allows us to help a lot of children and it’s a program that has a ton of room for growth, which will allow us to keep growing as a charitable organization. We couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with the Governor and Lt. Governor’s office in their efforts to make free basic need items available for the kids who need them most.”

The Foundation’s first fundraising effort since partnering with Basic Needs Closets is the upcoming 1st Annual Big Fish Ball on October 19. The black-tie event will be held at the new Hyatt Place Wilmington Riverfront by Riverfront Events. Attendees can expect an evening of live music, auction items, butlered hors d’ oeuvres, live-action food stations and cocktails. The Big Fish Charitable Foundation hopes to see a great turnout of guests from the various BFRG restaurants and local community members at this spectacular event to benefit an even better cause. All proceeds from the Big Fish Ball will go directly toward funding the Basic Needs Closets.
